Our Community Garden

Our community garden

Watering in the first salads & seedlings

For my husband Tom and I one of the most important issues to tackle the ‘peak oil’ issue is local food- “we live opposite a huge Asda- but are committed to shopping local! So we avoid Asda and buy from our local shops- the fruit and veg shop, the health food shop for things such as milk, veggie sausages, loo roll etc and the local bakery for bread and such, we also have an organic box delivery. People always ask if its more expensive and to be honest I’ve found I spend less (I’ve been ‘non-supermarket shopping’ for 5 years now) as I don’t buy ‘special offer’ extras and I’m not tempted by rows and rows of stuff that I don’t need!”

We are now taking their commitment to local food up a level, by starting a community food garden. We approached the council about a piece of ‘wasteland’ next door to their home, which was being used as a dumping ground for old mattresses, bike bits, bags of rubbish etc. We found out the land was owned by a local Housing Association, and after putting forward a proposal and design, the Housing Association have now granted them permission to use the land for a community garden.

“Its better than an allotment, as its near by, there are no waiting lists and we are all (neighbours and Transition group friends) working together, so lessening the work load” Rachael told us.

With no funding, We set to work with some funding requests, and were awarded a start-up grant of £250 from the Housing Association which was used to clear the site, buy tools and a new gate. We have also received £50 from the Action Earth Fund which paid for some yummy food for the BBQ at the recent garden ‘action day’ (where volunteers cleared up the site and began planting).

Rachael building the new gate

We have planted in fruit trees and bushes, potatoes, onions and have lots of salad stuff waiting to be planed in to the raised beds which are next on the ‘to do’ list.

Tom plants the first apple tree

“The focus is very much about community building and growing food- we see this as the most important response to peak oil and global warming- we need to start sharing resources and helping one another!”

issues of food...
A freind sent me this email today....it is rather alarming.
Is this the way we wish to go in deciding what we eat and/or the way we wish to assist humanity?

"On March 11 a new documentary was aired on French television. It is a documentary most Americans will never see, explaining how the gigantic biotech corporation Monsanto is threatening to destroy the agricultural biodiversity which has served mankind for thousands of years?

For millennia, farmers have saved seeds from season to season. But when Monsanto developed GM seeds that would resist its own herbicide, Roundup, Monsanto patented the seeds. For nearly all of its history the United States Patent and Trademark Office refused to grant patents on seeds, viewing them as life-forms with too many variables to be patented. But in 1980 the U.S. Supreme Court allowed for seed patents in a five-to-four decision, laying the groundwork for a handful of corporations to begin taking control of the world’s food supply.

Since the 1980s, Monsanto has become the world leader in genetic modification of seeds and has won 674 biotechnology patents, more than any other company.
Farmers who buy Monsanto’s Roundup Ready seeds are required to sign an agreement promising not to save the seed produced after each harvest for re-planting, or to sell the seed to other farmers. This means that farmers must buy new seed every year.

Monsanto puts pressure on farmers, farmers’ co-ops, seed dealers, and anyone else it suspects may have infringed its patents of genetically modified seeds.
To do this, Monsanto relies on a shadowy army of private investigators and agents. They secretly videotape and photograph farmers, store owners, and co-ops. They infiltrate community meetings. They gather information from informants about farming activities.

Some Monsanto agents pretend to be surveyors. Others confront farmers on their land and try to pressure them to sign papers giving Monsanto access to their private records. Farmers call them the “seed police” and use words such as “Gestapo” and “Mafia” to describe their tactics."

"Foodstuffs that are showing on food labels, low levels of sugar and/or sodium(salt), may be using a different ingredient.
The company, Senomyx, may be responsible for the sodium and sugar levels falling in various grocery items. It is possible they may be putting chemicals into our food right now, without telling us and without our realisation. The law -at least in the United States -says they don’t have to!

It appears Senomyx has contracted with Kraft, Nestle, Coca Cola, and Campbell Soup to put a chemical in foods that masks bitter flavours by turning off bitter flavour receptors on your tongue. How convenient! The companies can then reduce sugar and sodium levels by approximately half without affecting the flavour.

These chemical compounds are not required to be listed separately on food labels; they are grouped into the general category we read on labels of artificial flavours and companies will not say which foods contain this chemical.

Senomyx was able to obtain the United States FDA approval and a “generally recognised as safe” classification from the Flavour and Extract Manufacturers Association.

Approval was given in less than a year and a half, based on a safety study of rats conducted for just 3 months.

Food items that are most likely to contain these new chemicals include soups, juices (fruit and vegetable), ice cream and sauces."

This news is not new as you can see by the date below so how long have we been ingesting this stuff in the UK?

From Business Week On Line:
March 28, 2005

>Sweet Or Salty With Senomyx (http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_13/b3926149_mz027.htm)

"Each compound, [Robin Manners West of New Mexico's State Investment Council] says, works on a different flavour, so foodmakers can calculate how much to cut back on sugar, salt, or monosodium glutamate. On Mar. 3 two of Senomyx' enhancers got approval from the Flavour & Extract Manufacturers Assn., typically endorsed by the Food & Drug Administration, which dubbed them 'generally regarded safe.' These are the only approvals Senomyx needs." (Emphasis added)

If there is any kindness I can show
If there is any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow human being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.

The Wisdom of the Universe
The Wisdom of the Universe

All human beings are born with all the wisdom of the universe imprinted on their soul. It is in the DNA of everything. Indeed, "DNA" could very well be used as an acronym for Divine Natural Awareness.

Every living thing has this natural awareness built in. It is part of the system. It is part of the process that you call Life. This is why, when people are confronted with great wisdom, it often sounds so familiar to them. They agree with it almost at once. There is no argument. There is only a remembering. It is part of their Divine Natural Awareness. It is said to be "in their DNA." It feels like, "Ah, yes, of course."

We Are All God's Messengers

You are all my messengers. Every one of you.

You are all sending a message to life about life through your own life, lived.

The question is not, "Are you a messenger?" The question is, "What is the message you are sending?"
