Do you practise?  A message from William Bloom

Autumn is here, sometimes bringing with it a tendency to turn grumpy. The cooler weather and the longer nights. Those of you who know me will not be surprised at the targets of my occasional but usually well meaning grumpiness – people who spout about spirituality but do not actually do it.

My first taste of this was at school w
here the head teacher and his wife preached a gospel of kindness but behaved like bullies. You probably all have your own stories.

Snake Oil Salesmen
For forty years now I have been involved in t
he new spirituality that is emerging in our culture. I love it. We can call it new age, or holistic, or contemporary. Like all spiritualities, it has its beauty and it has its shadow sides. One of its shadows – and not a new one – is the promise of a quick fix. John Diamond, the journalist who died of cancer, once likened new age teachers to snake oil salesmen.

Anot
her problem is the way in which people get fascinated by the promises, the glamours, the reassurances and the entertainment. And then don’t do the actual spiritual work. If you think I’m too opinionated, remember that I have tasted more spiritual paths than some people have had hot breakfasts. (Is that a boast or a confession? Should you pity or envy me?) For ten years I co-directed the Alternatives Programme at St. James’s Church, Piccadilly, and experienced the cream of the world’s spiritual teache
rs. I have personally put on 600 or so lectures plus several conferences.

You name it. I have
heard it. There were many inspiring jewels and also some weird ones. I especially remember a Feng Shui teacher who advised audience members to put small pieces of aluminum foil on their shoulders to bring them power and success. My favourite bizarre folk were the Course in Miracles teachers from the southern states of the USA who threatened us with hell if we did not surrender to God’s all embracing forgiveness. That was an interesting mixed message.

Three Crucial Questions
One of t
he beauties of contemporary spirituality is its diversity. We are the first generation ever that is able to look at all the world’s spiritual traditions. This gives us a unique opportunity to see the core practices that they share. Despite all their differences – for example, from meditation to ecstatic dance – there are great similarities. It is like sport. No matter which particular sport you practice – golf, swimming, tennis – you still need to practice certain core skills such as fitness, muscle tone and stamina. Spirituality also has its core skills. Let me ask you three simple questions that illustrate this. The answers to these questions will show whether you have the basis of Spiritual Practice.

(But why, you may ask, would you want to do spiritual practice? Because, like piano or yoga or football, you want to get better at it! To become more awake and conscious. To be more connected. To soak in t
he
beauty and wonder.)

Anyway have a look at t
hese three questions and answer Yes or No:

Spiritual Connection: Do you connect with the pure wonder of existence?

Reflection: Do you reflect on your development and consciousness – and seek to guide them?

Service: Do you try to live a life is of benefit to others?

If you answer ‘Yes’ to those three questions then, according to most traditions, you already understand and observe the three core skills of Spiritual Practice. Do them regularly and with consciousness and you actually have an ongoing and grounded rhythm.

So t
he next important question to ask yourself is this: At least once a day, do you do them? Do you connect with the wonder of life and soak in spirit? Do you pause and reflect? Do you benefit othe
rs?

You can do all this in whatever way works best for you. T
here are so many different strategies and styles – contemplative, shamanic, traditional, dance, chant, landscape, healing, psychological and so on. All you need is to take responsibility for yourself and guide yourself into a rhythm of daily practice, so that ultimately it all becomes one ongoing flow of awareness and experience. This requires a great mix of spiritual maturity and continual innocence at the newness of each moment.

The Reward
W
hether you develop your Spiritual Practice in one of my courses or elsewhere, let me share with you what I believe a consistent practice will give you. If you regularly soak in your experience of spirit, and consistently guide the growth of your consciousness and of your usefulness, then you will receive what most people really want:

- A sense of personal integrity, not dependent on material success or the opinion of others
- Inner strength
- Love and compassion
- Deepening connection with t
he
pure wonder of existence
- Long-term vision
- A stable foundation for personal and career development
- A clear sense of morality and ethics
- Improved
he
alth
- Friends and family will enjoy your company more
- Quiet leadership qualities
- Character improvement
- T
he necessary foundation for exploring energy work, the
inner worlds and altered states of consciousness
- Keeps you alert and intelligent
- A sense of being in t
he
driving seat of your life
- Genuine enjoyment of life whilst being solidly present to t
he
challenges and suffering
- Consistent spiritual growth

Although it can be challenging to maintain a daily practice, look at those benefits! They are the best. Nothing else compares.

Ten Reminders for the Advanced Soul
There Are Only Two Ways

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

Ten Reminders for the Advanced Soul

Richard Bach

1. Remember that this world is not reality. It’s a playground of appearances on which you practise overcoming seems-to-be with your knowing of what is.

2. A lifetime is your chance to express t
he IS in the
most adventurous creative way you can imagine.

3. T
he IS is Life, Love, the Magnificent IT at the centre of your being. The IS does not recognize the limitations of spacetime, nor does it recognize your sorrows, fears, or beliefs. It does not see you as an upright biped on the surface of a third planet from a little sun at the edge of a small galaxy of an insignificant universe sandwiched for a moment between multiple trillions of other universes. It sees you reflecting Itself, and allows you the
absolute freedom to do anything you wish, except to die.

4. Who you are is someone who asked to be dropped off on earth so you could do something remarkable, something that matters to you, which you could not do anyw
here, anywhe
n else.

5. You are free to create and honour whatever past you choose, to
he
al and transform your present.

6. You do not create your own reality. You create your own appearances. Big difference!

7. If one inspired innocent loving soaring dreamer believes in a universe of joy and light and perfect being, and if s
he’s wrong and dies, it’s not the dreamer who’s been foolish, but the
universe.

8. If God looked directly into your eyes and said, ‘I command that you be happy in t
he
world as long as you live,’ what would you do?

9. You’ve all learned something that someone somew
here needs to remember. How will you let the
m know?

10. Your oneness in love is reality, and mirages cannot change reality. Don’t forget. No matter what seems to be.

On Death, from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

I shall be reading this today at my fathers funeral.

Rachael xxx

The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

an excerpt from chapter 27

You would know the secret of death.

But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?

The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.

If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;

And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.

Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?

And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink form the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Peace and Hope

Topic: Positive News!!

"Hope is the dream of a soul awake." ~ proverb

Dear Peace-makers and Friends,

Today we invite you to pause for a moment and reflect on the Power of Hope.

Hope is one of the 12 Noble Powers(R) all human beings possess. Hope is a fundamental virtue found in every world religion, alongside love and faith. It is the seed of possibility that stokes our imaginations and sustains our visions for Peace.

What is this force called Hope, and what is it for?

Essentially, Hope is a way of navigating the future, a means for transcending the darkness and limitation of the present day. Hope is not born for that which is easy or certain. It knows there are challenges and a price to pay. Hope is tough and audacious and often unreasonable. Hope dares to believe despite what it sees.

Hope for the future is a life force in itself. Physicians and caregivers affirm that hope can make the difference between who recovers and who doesn't, who lives and who dies.

Whether you are dealing with a serious illness, facing a financial challenge or living in conditions that make life difficult to bear, hope can be the difference between surviving and thriving or succumbing to fear and pain. You may feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and nearly ready to give up. Yet, with hope and even a small chance for improvement, you can summons the strength to rise up and carry on.

As we enter this season of Peace and Thanks-Giving, may you nurture this capacity for hope within yourself:

  • Visualize your desired outcomes;
  • Read stories of triumph and courage;
  • Spend time with resilient people;
  • Take one action to improve your life TODAY.

You can also be a source of hope for others by reaching out in your community and by choosing gifts that make a difference for it's creator as well as it's receiver. These exchanges of hope represent a world of opportunity and dignity to women and families in need. It is one of the simplest and nicest ways we have found to make Peace the way we live, and a reason we give.

Wishing you Peace, Hope and Love everyday,

Is This Who We Are?

The time has come for you to have more courage than any war has ever called upon you for, than any hardship has ever demanded, than even suffering has ever required. The time has come for you to confront yourself at the level of belief. The reason this will require so much courage is that your beliefs form the basis of who you think you are.

You must challenge yourself.

You must challenge your society.

You must challenge your world.

You must collectively ask:

Is this who we are? Is this who we choose to be? Is this the only way we can live? Is this the only way we know how to behave? Is it possible there might be another way?

Might this other way bring us closer to what we say, as a species, that we really want? Are we missing something here? Do we have the courage to seriously look at what that might be? Do we have the courage to accept the answer that our searching uncovers?

Free e-newsletter

From Rachael Hertogs

I know it’s been a while since I’ve sent out a newsletter- but I have been off on holiday and at a conference in the States- so I’ve been away from my computer for a while.

America was overwhelming! My daughter and I went together- initially to attend the Red Web Conference in San Francisco, but also to have a ‘girlie’ holiday together. I hired a car -which was a bit crazy of me as driving jet lagged in another country is quite scary! We stayed at a hostel in the Fisherman’s Wharf- where the boats and cruises come in- it had amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the bay and Alcatraz! We saw seals and sea lions in the harbour and a few mad swimmers- the water is freezing and has sharks- but not man eating ones! Our hostel was in a park where we saw raccoons and skunks up close. We visited Ashbury and Haight - hippieville- where Jimi Hendrix lived and Samuel Lewis- founder of the Dances of Universal Peace.

The Red Web conference was amazing- it made me want to set up a Red Web UK. Being around so many amazing women who work with other women was very inspiring. The day was full of lovely workshops for mothers and daughters, also ones on menopause, moon lodges and ceremony- beautiful!

After the conference we drove to Yosemite- which was an awesome place- so huge – and soul feeding to be somewhere surrounded by such beauty- the rocks, creeks, waterfalls… Then a bit of a culture shock going to Hollywood and then Malibu beach for a few days rest before heading back to

San Francisco for a couple of days before flying home! Phew!!

Luckily I had a few days rest at home to get over the jet lag before my classes started up again! But it’s good to be back… Enjoy this newsletter and do check the link to the short movie at the bottom.

het of the Baha'i faith

An affirmation for you - The Spirit now makes Itself known in my life, since the Spirit is Life and since my being is of the Spirit. Truth rises to great heights in me. I now empty myself of all thoughts or ideas which would refute Its control of my affairs. The Spirit finds in me nothing to stay Its course. Life is perfectly expressed through me. I am the God-intended man and my every experience shows forth this fact about myself.

Tips: Oil Up!

Have you noticed with Autumn arriving how dry the skin can become?

As t
he ground, leaves, plants and air dries up, so does our skin. This is a good time to Oil Up or Butter Up!

After you have taken a bath or shower, leave some water on your skin and massage a combination of skin care oils, just one skin care oil or t
he body butter we made in class. The oil will glide over your body with the moisture from from the water and cover your skin lightly.
Oils contain Vitamins and Minerals which are nourishing for t
he skin. Oils also add protection to your skin, helping you to stay well.

Skin Care Oils: Almond, Apricot, Jojoba, Olive, Sunflower, Safflower

Beloved, Be Love

People spend whole lifetimes seeking that which they already have. They have it, because they are it.

All you have to do to have love is to be love.

You are My beloved. Each of you. All of you. None of you is more lovable than another, because none of you is more of Me than another -- although some of you remember more of Me, and, therefore, more of yourself.

So, do not forget yourself.

Beloved, be love.

Do this in remembrance of Me.

Lust for life
We have a fantastic standard of living. If you are reading this e-mail, then compared to any other period in history and most other parts of the world we are the fortunate ones. We live in a time of relative peace, prosperity and plenty.
Opportunities are abundant for us. If we are feeling held back from pursuing our dreams by something just imagine how our ancestors felt.
Relatively our ability to pursue our dreams has never been greater.
This is true for us as individuals and also for us a society.
But - there are no guarantees that this window of opportunity will continue indefinitely for either.
I read this morning that an authoritative report estimates that "peak oil" passed in 2006. Peak Oil is the name given to the moment when global oil production reaches it's maximum and then begins to fall inexorably.
A great deal of the affluence and opportunity that we enjoy in our part of society is based on the abundance of relatively cheap oil.
I think of our society like an adolescent who has just inherited the family fortune and has gone on the mother of all binges.
Oil is the wealth of our planet which these few generations have inherited and we have not always invested it wisely.
One of the positive investments we have made with this inheritance has been in mass travel. Mass travel has created a generation of internationalists with a far greater appreciation of different cultures and lifestyles than ever before. It is mass travel and internationalism that creates the connections that make peace possible.
If our dream as individuals is happiness and fulfilment then peace and security is an essential foundation.
If our dream as a society is continued evolution of our lifestyle and consciousness then we are in a race against time.
It is time to grow up. We must now shift all of our investment away from simple hedonism and fear limitation (war, exclusion, greed) and towards love and sustainability.
The recipe is simple, the challenge is to apply it.
We must invest as much of the rest of our inheritance as we can in creating truly sustainable energy systems that can sustain the positive aspects of our lifestyle.
Every single one of us must commit to a life based in authenticity, love and contribution so that when the crunch comes the response is collaboration and not conflict. And both as individuals and as a society we must use our energy wisely.
We are the fortunate ones - and that is why the responsibility lies with us - with you - personally - now.

Sept/Oct 2007 e-newsletter

From Rachael Hertogs

Archive newsletters can be found at http://angel-healing.tripod.com

What a busy summer it’s been! I haven’t had time to write a newsletter since July. As well as dashing from camp to camp and  festival to festival I really enjoyed my new Reiki Class at ARA (Addiction Recovery Agency) which ran a Reiki I course through August, I did a couple of relaxation classes at the Beacon Centre and Brentry Children’s Centre which went down really well, began co-tutoring on a Reiki Master 1 year training and even managed a few days of relaxation on the land I co-own with a like minded group of friends before getting back in to the September routine of getting my son up for school and teaching again. Phew! One of my Summers highlights was the Rivenstone Festival on Dartmoor where I met two amazing Sami Tribe women (reindeer herders from Lapland) and did a few workshops with on herbs and Joik (I may have spelt that wrong!) A joik is a sacred form of singing- like chanting or meditation and is very beautiful.

Since I will be travelling to the States at the end of this month I haven’t scheduled a Reiki I class apart from doing a few 1-1 sessions, and Reiki II will be running in January for those of you who feel ready to move to that level. Contact me to register your interest...more info below…

Whilst in the States I’ll be attending the Red Web Foundation Conference- the Red Web work with women and girls around menstruation, cycles, womanhood etc so I hope to learn and share some good things.

Conversations With God, Book 3

An affirmation for you - I awake each morning to the magic of life’s gifts and blessings. I savor the sweetness of sacred time in soulful communion with Spirit and creation.

Tips: Nettles for Clear Skin and Shiny Hair

Nettles is one of the best herbs to drink as a tea for clear skin and shiny hair. Nettles cleanse the blood, nourishes and tones the body. It’s rich in vitamins and minerals. Use any leftover tea to fertilize your plants or make a tea just for your plants.

How to Make an Infusion with Nettles
Place 4 tablespoons of dried nettle leaf in a glass jar (like a juice jar-one that won't shatter from boiling water), pour 4 cups of boiling water over t
he nettles. Let it sit overnight or for at least half a day. Strain out the nettles. Drink 1-2 cups a day, cool or warmed. Keep in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days.

You can also make a cup of regular hot tea with it. Use 1 tablespoon dried nettles to 1 cup of boiling water. Let steep for 5 minutes. I know of a couple of people that drink it to
help with their allergies. You can also add some honey to your hot tea.

Much love and many blessings, Rachael xxx
