Peace 1 day 21 Sept
Peace One Day - the UN World Peace Day - will once again be celebrated in Bristol on Friday 21 September, beginning with a musical peace procession along the harbourside celebrating the cultural diversity of the city, and making a symbolic offering to peace. At the Pierian Centre there will be a chance to see the Peace One Day film and record your peace pledges and then a musical evening of contemplation and celebration, beginning at 8.00 pm and concluding with the Universal Greeting. On the following day, Saturday 22 September, the Pierian Centre will host a day of meditation as a way of peace. We also have a booklet of inspirational quotations about peace published by Gaunts House to give away on Friday evening - first come, first served! For more information have a look at:

It's not nice to fool Mother Nature
Mood: a-ok Topic: Musings Food Definitions for the 21st Century By Brit Elders We have to alter our identification of foods and expand our GMO - If you work for Monsanto GMO means money. If you are a Transgenic - Sounds fancy, huh? Often, the label GMO and the GM - It no longer stands for the car company. It now refers GE - This GE you won't see on a TV set. This is often an Monsanto - Monsanto Company is a multinational agricultural Roundup Ready Seeds - These are seeds that have been BT corn - A corn plant that has been developed though This and other GM foods are being carefully considered as the Irradiated food - There are several types of radiant energy The big problem in all of this is that you don't have a choice In his and other's views, biotech is critical to the survival There is one way to make certain you aren't a lab rat and So what is missing in this high-tech, 21st Century food chain? I don't usually editorialize in my newsletters, but I can't As the old saying goes, "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature."

$250 biscuit recipe
Mood: cheeky Topic: Positive News!! > Biscuit Recipe > > Please forward when you finish reading! > > A little background: Neiman-Marcus, if you don't know already, is a VERY expensive shop; i.e. they sell a typical $8.00 t-shirt for $50.00. > > > THIS IS A TRUE STORY > > My daughter and I had just finished lunch at a Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas. Because both of us are such biscuit lovers, we decided to try > the "Neiman-Marcus cookie". It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe. The waitress said with a small frown, "I'm > afraid not, but you can BUY the recipe." I asked how much, and she responded; "Only two fifty - it's a great deal!" > > I agreed to that, and told her to add it to my bill.Thirty days later, I got my VISA statement, and the Neiman-Marcus charge was $285.00. I > looked at it again, and I remembered I had only spent $9.95 for two sandwiches and about $20.00 for a scarf. At the bottom of the > statement, it said, "Cookie Recipe-$250.00". That was outrageous! > > > I called Neiman's Accounting Department and told them the waitress had said it was "two fifty", which clearly does not mean "two hundred and > fifty dollars" by any reasonable interpretation of the phrase. > > Neiman-Marcus refused to budge. They would not refund my money because, according to them; "What the waitress told you is not our > problem. You have already seen the recipe. We absolutely will not refund your money." > > I explained to the Accounting Department lady the criminal statutes which govern fraud in the state of Texas. I threatened > to report them to the Better Business Bureau and the Texas Attorney General's office. > > I was basically told: Do what you want. Don't bother thinking of how you can get even, and don't bother trying to get any of > your money back" > > I said, OK, you've got my $250, and now I'm going to have $250 worth of fun." I told her that I was going to see to it that > every cookie lover in the world with an e-mail account gets a $250 cookie recipe from Neiman-Marcus... for free. She replied, > "I wish you wouldn't do that." I said, "Well, perhaps you should have thought of that before you RIPPED ME OFF!" and > slammed down the phone. > > So here it is! > > Please pass it on to everyone you can possibly think of. I paid $250 for this, and I don't want Neiman-Marcus to EVER make > another penny from this recipe! > > NEIMAN-MARCUS COOKIES (Recipe may be halved) > > 2 (500 ml) cups butter > > 24 oz. Trust in Nature
Mood: bright Topic: Musings A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further. So to help the butterfly, he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of it's life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If we were to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. We could never fly!

Being Alone
Mood: happy Topic: Musings Being Alone A Relationship With Self The most important relationship we have in our lives is with our selves. And even though we are the only ones who are present at every moment of our lives—from birth onward—this relationship can be the most difficult one to cultivate. This may be because society places such emphasis on the importance of being in a romantic partnership, even teaching us to set aside our own needs for the needs of another. Until we know ourselves, however, we cannot possibly choose the right relationship to support our mutual growth toward our highest potential. By allowing ourselves to be comfortable with being alone, we can become the people with whom we want to have a relationship. Perhaps at no other time in history has it been possible for people to survive, and even thrive, while living alone. We can now support ourselves financially, socially, and emotionally without needing a spouse for survival in any of these realms. With this freedom, we can pursue our own interests and create fulfilling partnerships with friends, business partners, creative cohorts, and neighbors. Once we’ve satisfied our needs and created our support system, a mate then becomes someone with whom we can share the bounty of all we’ve created and the beauty we’ve discovered within ourselves. As we move away from tradition and fall into more natural cycles of being in the world today, we may find that there are times where being alone nourishes us and other periods in which a partnership is best for our growth. We may need to learn to create spaces to be alone within relationships. When we can shift our expectations of our relationships with ourselves and others to opportunities for discovery, we open ourselves to forge new paths and encounter uncharted territory. Being willing to know and love ourselves, and to find what truly makes us feel deeply and strongly, gives us the advantage of being able to attract and choose the right people with whom to share ourselves, whether those relationships fall into recognizable roles or not. Choosing to enjoy being alone allows us to fully explore our most important relationship—the one with our true selves.

The Whale
Mood: a-ok Topic: Positive News!! The Whale If you read the front page story of the SF Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralon Islands (outside the Golden Gate ) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, t he only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her . a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed gently around --- she thanked them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same. May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate ..to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude. I pass this on to you in the same spirit.
